Frequently Asked Questions

What are online therapy services and how do they work?

Online therapy services provide convenient and confidential counseling from the comfort of your home. With Stephen Rought’s online counseling, you can access therapy sessions via video, phone, or messaging, ensuring flexibility for your schedule. Whether you're looking for individual therapy or couples counseling, online sessions are just as effective as in-person meetings, offering personalized support wherever you are in California.

What are the benefits of in-person therapy?

In-person therapy offers a face-to-face connection that can enhance communication, build trust, and create a more immersive therapeutic environment. It may be especially beneficial for those who prefer direct interaction or feel more comfortable discussing sensitive issues in person.

How can individual therapy benefit me?

Individual therapy with Stephen helps you work through personal challenges in a safe, non-judgmental space. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or self-esteem, individual therapy allows you to explore your thoughts and emotions, build coping strategies, and gain insights into your behavior. Through a collaborative approach, you’ll work together to set goals and address the root causes of your difficulties, helping you make lasting, positive changes.

What is parent coaching and how can it help?

Parent coaching with Stephen Rought offers guidance to help you navigate parenting challenges. Whether you're dealing with difficult behaviors, communication issues, or wanting to enhance your connection with your child, parent coaching provides practical strategies tailored to your family’s needs. Through online sessions, Stephen will work with you to strengthen your parenting skills, improve family dynamics, and foster a positive, supportive environment for your children’s growth and development.

How does financial therapy help improve my relationship with money?

Financial therapy with Stephen is designed to address the emotional and psychological factors influencing your financial decisions. If stress, anxiety, or past experiences impact your money management, financial therapy can help you develop a healthier relationship with money. Through a combination of emotional support and practical advice, you’ll learn how to manage financial stress, set realistic goals, and make more informed choices to improve your financial well-being.

What can I expect from couples counseling with Stephen?

Couples counseling with Stephen offers a supportive environment for partners to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their relationship. Whether you're navigating relationship stress, infidelity, or life transitions, Stephen will guide you both through understanding each other's needs, enhancing intimacy, and building a stronger connection. Couples therapy is designed to empower both partners to develop healthy patterns that foster a loving, balanced relationship.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person counseling?

Yes, online therapy services with Stephen are just as effective as in-person sessions. Online therapy offers the same level of care, support, and personalized attention, with the added convenience of accessing sessions from anywhere in California. Whether you're engaging in individual therapy, couples counseling, or financial therapy, online sessions allow you to work through your concerns in a comfortable, private setting while maintaining a strong therapeutic connection.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Deciding if therapy is right for you is a personal choice, but if you're facing challenges like relationship struggles, financial stress, or emotional difficulties, counseling can be incredibly helpful. Stephen offers a range of services, including individual therapy, parent coaching, and more, to address your specific needs. If you're unsure, starting with an initial consultation can help you better understand how therapy can support your goals and whether it’s the right step for you.

What is tele-health?

Tele-health is live therapy conducted via video through the internet.

How does tele-health work?

I use a website called doxy.me for tele-health and will send you a unique, HIPAA-compliant link before each session. If you're new to this, just ask for help on how to log on, and I can assist you.

Where is your office located?

For people in the Chino Hills area, I am available for in-person sessions at a local office. If you are not in the Chino Hills area and are located in California, therapy can be conducted anywhere your computer is!

Who would not be a good fit for tele-health?

For the safety of those seeking therapy due to the physical limitations of tele-health, there are limits for who is best suited for therapy services online. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts with a plan or intention to self-harm, have recently been hospitalized for mental health concerns, are experiencing psychosis (hearing voices, etc.), or are in severe distress, I would not be the best fit for you via tele-health. In those cases, in-person therapy may be better suited.

Is therapy for "crazy" people?

No. Therapy is a powerful tool that, I believe, everyone has the capacity to benefit from. It is a misconception to believe that therapy is only beneficial for people with extreme conditions. Everyone has the ability to want and seek out support to better themselves. In fact, therapy can be a transformative experience for anyone seeking personal growth, self-discovery, or even just a place to talk about life’s challenges.

Is therapy confidential?

It is my legal and ethical obligation to maintain your privacy. Your records, along with what you say in therapy, are kept confidential. In fact, confidentiality is the core component to make therapy effective. You have the right to have a safe and confidential therapeutic experience; however, there are a few exceptions:

If you provide written consent to release your information.

If your records are subpoenaed for legal reasons.

If there is suspected child abuse, dependent, or elder abuse.

If there is a serious threat to harm another person.

If there is intention to seriously harm oneself.

I have never talked to anyone before. I am used to handling things on my own. Aren't people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to seek support. Therapy is a sign of strength and self-awareness, and it can be a transformative experience for anyone seeking personal growth, self-discovery, or even just a place to talk about life’s challenges.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes information about the services provided, the diagnosis, and other necessary details. You can submit this to your insurance company to seek reimbursement for out-of-network therapy services.

How do I prepare for my first session?

Before our first session, I will send you some forms to complete, including consent forms and a brief questionnaire about your current concerns and goals. Please fill these out and return them before our session.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require a 24-hour notice for cancellations or rescheduling. If you miss an appointment or cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, you will be charged the full session fee.

How long will I need therapy?

The length of therapy varies depending on your individual goals and concerns. Some people benefit from a few sessions, while others may need longer-term support. We will regularly discuss your progress and adjust the treatment
